#96: The Greene Turtle

Date Visited: 22 July 2010

Meal: Dinner

Diners: 2 - Me & Wendy

Experience: One of Leesburg's newest restaurants, The Greene Turtle is located in the Marketplace at Potomac Station shopping center, along with other previously reviewed eateries Subway, Manhattan Pizza, James Cafe, Arby's, Zpizza (now closed), and Moe's Southwest Grill. The Greene Turtle is epitome of what a sports bar should be; there are TVs everywhere (including one per table!) with all manner of sports, loud music, and loud customers (in a good way). The Greene Turtle is a franchise, with many locations in Maryland, four in Virginia, two in Delaware, and one in Washington, D.C. The menu is what you'd expect - bar food, but we found it to include good variety, good taste, and good value. There were several families there when we visited, and despite the background noise level, would be considered family-friendly.

For this inagural visit, I started off with a Sam Adams Summer Ale and Wendy got a Pink Lemonade. We shared a "Sweet 'Tater Fries" appetizer which came with a caramel pecan dipping sauce which was quite good. For my dinner I got the "Triple Basket" Combo which included Rockfish Fillets, Chicken Tenders, and Battered Shrimp, along with three dipping sauces to go with them. It also came with french fries and cole slaw. Wendy got the Apple Turkey Ciabatta sandwich (turkey, apples, bacon, melted cheddar, and sweet Vidalia onion dressing).

It was all good and fun. Our server "Squeej" was a character and added to the enjoyment! Our overall experience was good and the menu contains a few more things that we'd like to try, so we'll be back!

Location: 603 Potomac Station Dr., Leesburg, VA, 20176, 703-777-5511

Web site: http://thegreeneturtle.com/

Total bill: $42.27 + $10.00 tip = $52.27

Jim - thanks for the writeup of The Greene Turtle. Glad you both enjoyed your meal and the overall experience.

A couple of things your neighbors in Leesburg might also be interested to know:

- The in-booth TVs add to the family-friendly atmosphere by offering a selection of cartoons and other child-focused entertainment, while the big-screen TVs overhead almost exclusively broadcast sports.

- The Greene Turtle is currently (as of July 2010) running a "Kids Eat Free" promotion, in which kids 12 and under will receive a free meal (off the kids menu) when another regular-price sandwich, burger or entree is purchased.

- All participating locations also are currently offering "Turtle Bands," rubber wrist bands shaped like the chain's famous turtle logo. These are free for a limited time and available in a variety of colors.

- Starting the middle of August, the Leesburg Greene Turtle will also play host throughout the coming NFL season to the "Redskins Late Night" show, one of the Washington team's official programs that airs late Saturday night/early Sunday morning and takes a somewhat light-hearted look at the team, its games and its players. Twenty episodes of the show will be taped on location at the restaurant on Tuesday evenings. Many Redskins players will be on-site for tapings throughout the season.

- Finally, in terms of The Greene Turtle's presence throughout Virginia, the Leesburg restaurant, which opened earlier this year, was the first franchise location and second overall Greene Turtle location to open in the state. The first site, which is operated by The Greene Turtle's corporate offices, debuted in Fredericksburg late last year, and the state's third site (another franchise), just opened its doors last month down in Chesapeake. The fourth site, which will again be run by the corporate offices, is set to open soon down in Hampton, and The Greene Turtle is hoping to find franchisees interested in opening other sites throughout Virginia (as well as in other states throughout the East).

Once again, thank you for visiting and sharing your experience with others. We hope to see you and many of your neighbors back at the Turtle sometime soon.

Regards,
Greg Pitkoff
Public Relations Managing Director
on behalf of The Greene Turtle Franchising Corp.

I have to give a thumbs down to the Greene Turtle if you are there for extended viewing of any kind.

There are many, many things they do well. The food is pretty decent, the service is usually very good and the prices are not super cheap, but reasonable. The problem is that they are a sports bar, but have absolutely terrible viewing angles to the screens. If you sit in the bar areas and watch for a few hours, your neck will feel like you slept on it wrong. The tv sets are all placed far too high up on the walls and since most of the seating rings the bar and walls, it means you basically have to lean back and stare up at a high angle to the games. A few hours of that, and you will not be a happy camper.

This bar needs a redesign. I get the distinct impression it was designed based on a pancake house and not a sports bar! Buffalo Wild Wings has a great viewing experience and terrible service, Greene Turtle is the exact opposite. So, pick your poison I guess.
